Marshall Students Join Others in Ohio River Run By Grant Traylor Huntington (HNN) --- Marshall University students will participate with students from three other colleges in the annual Ohio River Run starting this Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, in Paducah, Ky. Students from Marshall University, Thomas More College, the University of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University will participate in the event. All of these schools have participated for the last three years. The Ohio River Run covers the river's entire 981-mile stretch and starts Sunday, Aug. 1 in Paducah, not far from where the Ohio joins the Mississippi River at Cairo, Ill. Two weeks of research will follow before the study ends in Pittsburgh on Aug. 15. The group will travel on the 65-foot long Chattanooga Star Riverboat. Charles Somerville will head the research that will be taking place during the Ohio River Run. Somerville is a professor of biological science at Marshall University. Traveling with Dr. Somerville will be Lisa Smith, an MU grad student who worked on the 2003 Ohio River Run with Somerville. Also going with the Marshall group will be Huntington native Sydnee Smirl. Research being done by the groups will be on two main points of bacteria. Those points include bacteria with fecal contamination and bacteria that are antibiotic resistant. The Chattanooga Star Riverboat is scheduled to make an appearance in Huntington during its 981-mile journey. The boat is tentatively scheduled to dock in Huntington around 8 p.m. on Aug. 10 before the final trek to Pittsburgh.
