Publisher: Matthew S. PinsonDave Kinchen began his journalism career in January 1966 as a general assignment reporter for the Hammond (Ind.) Times. Following his graduation from Northern Illinois University in 1961 (B.A. with honors, English major), he worked for several yeas as an insurance claims adjuster for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in Chicago and Northern Indiana.
From Hammond, Kinchen moved later in 1966 to the new Bloomington (Ind.) Tribune, a state-of-the-art start-up daily. He left the Tribune in the fall of 1967 to join the staff of the Milwaukee Sentinel. He stayed at The Sentinel until the beginning of 1976, when he joined the real estate staff of the Los Angeles Times. His career at The Times lasted until the summer of 1990. He worked in public relations before relocating to Hinton WV in 1992, during one of the worst recessions ever experienced in California. In 1993 Kinchen was hired as a copy editor by the Register-Herald in Beckley. By the time he retired in 2000, he was the business and labor editor. He also produced a weekly book column, reviewing hundreds of books from 1995 to 2000.
