Weekend First at HNN: Weekly Movie Comings and Goings
By Tony Rutherford
Huntington News Network Columnist
Huntington, WV (HNN) -- New Mainstreamers… Filmed in the Bluegrass State,
“Elizabethtown” sends Orlando Bloom back to his Kentucky roots for his
father’s funeral. During the flight, he falls for the attendant (Kirsten
Dunst); “Domino,” a Beverly Hills model trades in the runway for a shooting
gallery as she (Keira Knightley) turns bounty hunter; “The Fog,” a coastal
town becomes enveloped in a thick fog reminiscent of one 100 years ago when
a wrecked shipload of ghosts starting whomever they found.
Artistic Holdovers…
Roman Polanski has given us an extraordinary range of films --- from
“Chinatown” and “Rosemary’s Baby” to “The Pianist” and “Tess.” Now, he
tackles Charles Dickens classic, “Oliver Twist,” updating the story, adding
lush photography, and a brisk narrative. Ben (“Gandhi”) Kingsley stars as
the notorious Fagin and Barney Clark plays the orphaned pick pocket.
Critics have given Polanski’s “Twist” a mostly positive reception while
describing it as “one of the darkest adaptations of Dickens” (N.Y. Post) and
“wonderful” (N.Y. Times) to an evocative comparison to “The Pianist” where
Polanski “considers the case of a person shaped (or misshaped?) by a fate
over which he has no control.” (Entertainment Weekly)
“Oliver Twist” continues at the Keith Albee and Park Place Stadium Cinemas.
