Huntington, WV (HNN) -- New Mainstreamers …

Charlize Theron stars as female coal miner who brings the first successful sexual harassment and sexual abuse lawsuit against a mining firm in “North Country.” The story follows Jenson v. Eveleth Mines, but has been fictionalized. Theron and Frances McDormand may contend for Oscar nods for their performances

Combining supernatural elements with dark drama, “Stay” unveils the efforts of an Ivy League therapist (Ewan McGregor) to prevent a student (Ryan Gosling) from committing suicide.

“Doom” debuts for the science-fiction crowd. Set in the year 2145, a group of Marines on a Martian moon fight “Alien” inspired monsters. The film is based on a video game of the same name.

In “Dreamer,” Dakota (“War of the Worlds”) Fanning stars as the daughter of a Kentucky horse trainer (Kurt Russell) who nurse a horse back to health hoping to enter her in a big race. This is the first directorial effort for John Gatins who penned “Coach Carter.”

Artistic / Limited Openings and Hold Over’s …

Kids in America: Banding together to ‘stick it’ to their high school principal, the flick introduces several new faces, particularly those with TV credits. An early review complimented the production for its take-off on John Hughes’ 80s films like “Sixteen Candles.” Also, there’s a Guinness Book of World Records kiss. (Marquee Pullman, exclusive)

Proof: Adapted from a Tony Award winning Broadway play, the script retains exceedingly intense character drama despite adding a little extra scenery to what was a one-room set. The reasonably appropriate choices include a shopping for a funeral dress sequence, as well as scenes in the church, on campus, and those at an airport. These prevent a too stagy appearance and permit excruciating dramatic conflict. Expect another Oscar nom for Gwyneth Paltrow who plays the desperately depressed and self-esteem challenged Catherine. (Cinema Theatre, downtown Huntington, exclusive)

Catch ‘em While You Can … “The Gospel” moves into two and three a day showings; Roman Polanski “Oliver Twist” continues at the Keith Albee; “Unfinished Life” continues at Marquee Pullman.
