Weekend First at HNN: Weekly Movie Comings and Goings
By Tony Rutherford
Huntington News Network Columnist
Huntington, WV (HNN) -- New Mainstreamers …
Four new films hope to entice you into local cinemas this week:
- “Saw II” arrives in time for the Halloween scream
season. Serial killer “Jigsaw” has returned and locked up eight victims
forcing them to play deadly games to remain among the living.
- “Prime” casts Bryan Greenberg, as a young
painter, who’s dating a career driven older woman (Uma Thurman). He also
just happens to be the son of her psychoanalyst (Meryl Streep).
- “Weather Man” tells of a Chicago meteorologist
(Nicholas Cage) who has a middle age quandary when his wife leaves him and
he must decide whether personal and professional successes can go together.
- “Legend of Zorro” adds Catherine Zeta-Jones as
the sword carrying wife of Alejandro de la Vega (Antonio Banderas) for a
supposedly instant swashbuckling chemistry
Artistic / Limited Openings and Hold Overs …
G: A sexy and sophisticated updating of “The Great Gatsby” (where The
Hamptons becomes a greed paradise) with jamming hip hop compounded with
sultry film noir. Nominated for Best Independent film at the Black reel
Awards, “G” won for Best cinematography at the Milan International Film
Festival. Although labeled The Hip Hop Great Gatsby, the film asks “does hip
hop have heart” and maintains the “evil is selfishness” with a cast that
includes Richard Jones, Blair Underwood, Chenoa Maxwell, and Andre Royo. A
love for “Hustle and Flow” hip hop is not a requirement for enjoyment of “G”
which has played at the Toronto International Film Festival, Tribeca Film
Festival and Kansas Film Festival.
Kids in America: Banding together to ‘stick it’ to their high school
principal, the flick introduces several new faces, particularly those with
TV credits. An early review complimented the production for its take-off on
John Hughes’ 80s films like “Sixteen Candles.” Also, there’s a Guinness Book
of World Records kiss. (Marquee Pullman, exclusive)
Proof: Adapted from a Tony Award winning Broadway play, the script retains
exceedingly intense character drama despite adding a little extra scenery to
what was a one room set. The reasonably appropriate choices include a
shopping for a funeral dress sequence, as well as scenes in the church, on
campus, and those at an airport. These prevent a too stagy appearance and
permit excruciating dramatic conflict. Expect another Oscar nom for Gwyneth
Paltrow who plays the desperately depressed and self-esteem challenged
Catherine. (Cinema Theatre, downtown Huntington, exclusive)
Catch ‘em While You Can … Roman Polanski’’s “Oliver Twist” ends Thursday at
the Keith Albee; “Proof” continues at the Cinema; “Unfinished Life, ” and
“Kids in America” continues with a 10:00 p.m. only show at Marquee Pullman.
