Callaghan Criticizes New Border Fence Measure
From Mike Callaghan for Second Congressional District Press Release
Charleston, WV (HNN) – Mike Callaghan, Democratic Congressional candidate
(Second District), commented on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006 on the border bill
signed into law by President Bush, which authorizes a 700 mile fence to be
built on the 2,100 mile United States-Mexico border.
“This is nothing more than an election season ploy to make voters believe
that the Republicans are actually doing something about the border problem,”
Callaghan said. “This bill is hollow legislation that does not address key
issues at hand with immigration. There is no funding to make this fence a
reality. Nothing is being done to address employers who knowingly hire
illegal immigrants.”
“I’m sure my opponent will tout this as a real success for immigration
reform. It’s unfortunate that in reality this is not the case.” Callaghan
continued, “This is a matter of national security. Something real must be
done. What good is this bill when there is no funding for the proposed
fence? If we weren’t giving such large tax cuts to the wealthiest 1% or
spending billions of dollars every month in Iraq we would be in a much
better position to really secure our border.”
